Middle English Dictionary Entry
upon prep.
Entry Info
Forms | upon prep. Also up(e)one, upp(e)on, uppone, uppond, upan, upen, upin, op(p)on, opone, op(p)oun, op(p)an, oup(p)on, ap(p)on, apong, appon(n)e, apoin, apan & (early) uppan, uppen, uphon, (chiefly SWM) hup(p)on, huppen, hoppon, houpon & (error or in name) upn. |
Etymology | From up adv. plus on prep. & OE uppan, uppon prep. Because of the difficulty of distinguishing ME reflexes of OE uppan from the various spellings of the comb. up adv. plus on prep., all forms with -n(e appear here; cp. up prep. from the same OE source. It is usu. impossible to distinguish upon definitively from the collocation of up and on; some exx., esp. in senses 1b. and 7.(f), could be construed as the two words. |
