(a) To establish (a kingdom, college, etc.), found; create (an office); also, organize (a monastery); ~ and founden, founden and ~, establish and endow (an institution); ~ on, establish (the kingdom of the Jews) upon (God); (b) to bring (heaven, the human body, etc.) into a fixed, ordered existence; ordain (a lifespan, the natural order, etc.) by divine decree; also, impose (a condition) [quot. a1500 Chartier]; ?also, make a disposition [quot. a1382]; (c) to institute (a sacrament, practice, etc.); enact (a law, an ordinance, etc.); -- also with that clause, sometimes with grammatical subj. hit; ordeinen and ~; ~ to, provide (a code of law) for (sb.); (d) to prescribe (hours of worship); regulate (an activity); decree (a penalty).
