Middle English Dictionary Entry
wā̆r(e adj.
Entry Info
Forms | wā̆r(e adj. Also warre, waire, waer(e, whar(e, (NWM) quar, (early) wær & wer(e, werre, wher, (WM) weore & (errors) waree, þear, þer; comp. warer(e, warre, (early SW) werrer; sup. (early) warreste, wærrest. |
Etymology | OE wær, oblique wær-, war-; comp. wærra, (K) werra. The ME phrase bẹ̄ (inf., impv., and pr. sbj. of bẹ̄n v.) plus wā̆r(e eventually becomes the MnE verb beware, but there is little evidence that this has already taken place in ME. There are a few exx. of bẹ̄ plus wā̆r(e written as though they were a single word, but two of the texts that have the single word (Gower CA and WBible(1) (Bod 959)) also have the two words separately, and there are also many exx. of another word intervening between bẹ̄ and wā̆r(e (e.g., right(e, thanne, thǒu, wel, yẹ̄). Sometimes the phrase bẹ̄ plus wā̆r(e takes an object and thus functions as a trans. verb (see, e.g., sense 1a.(c), the last quot. in 1b.(c), and sense 2a.(d)), but in many of these exx. wā̆r(e is clearly the adj. used predicatively, other forms of bẹ̄n besides bẹ̄ are used, and worthen v.(1) can be used in place of bẹ̄n (see sense 1b.(c)). It has seemed better, therefore, to treat all occurrences of bẹ̄ plus wā̆r(e as a phrase here. |
