JCMS is proud to offer a number of open access publications related to all aspects of cinema and media studies.
Fifth Issue
The Fifth Issue is a collection of online-only, open-access research articles published in roughly four groupings over the course of each year. Like articles in the print issues, Fifth Issue articles are fully peer-reviewed and conform to the journal's general submission guidelines. Authors interested in publishing in the Fifth Issue should submit their work through the standard submission process.
Archival News
Archival News is a quarterly bulletin of highlights from audiovisual archives, including the latest on acquisitions, preservation, exhibitions and festivals, professional meetings, awards, publications and DVDs, and online resources. New Research
New Research (formerly known as Professional Notes) is a quarterly feature that curates and circulates lists of recent publications in media studies, including books, articles, blogs, podcasts, and video essays on film and TV. In Focus
In Focus publishes a series of short essays in each issue of JCMS. In Focus dossiers are based around a special topic, selected by a guest editor, with a timely significance to film and media studies. Reviews
Reviews are featured in each issue of JCMS. JCMS seeks to review innovative new work that speaks broadly to the field of cinema and media studies. Proposals for reviews and reviewers are encouraged. Spotlight
Spotlight, organized by the JCMS Outreach & Equity Editors, publishes interviews with scholars, caucuses, and scholarly interest groups (SIGs) from SCMS. Teaching Media
Teaching Media is dedicated to sharing ideas and resources for pedagogical practices. JCMS Teaching Dossier publishes short essays on pedagogical topics in film and media studies.
