[6-text p 642] criste hateþ vtterly; And no wonder is; ffor he deyed for to maake concorde; [643] & mor schame done þei to criste; þan dide þei þat him crucified; ffor god loueþ better þat frenchepe be amonges folke; þan he dide his owen body; whiche he ȝaf for vnitees; þerfore beene þei likned to þe deuel þat euere is aboute to make discorde
[644] ¶ Nowe commeþ þe sinne of dowble tonge suche as speken faire befor folke; & wikkede be-hynde or elles þei maken sembland as þouhe þe spake of goode entencion or elles in game & pleye; And ȝit þe speke of wikked entente;
[645] ¶ Now commeþ be-wreynge of counseile þorwhe whiche a man is defamed; vneþes maye he restoreþ þe damages;
[646] Nowe commeþ manas þat is an hopen foly; ffor he þat manasseþ; he þreteþ more þan he maie do ful oft time;
[647] Nowe comeþ ydel wordes þat is wiþeouten profite of him þat spekeþ þo wordes & eke of him þat herkeneþ þe wordes; Or elle ydel wordes bien þo þat bien nedelesse or wiþouten entent of naturely profite; [648] And al be it þat Idel wordes som|time bien venial sinne ȝit schold men doute hem; ffor we scholne ȝeue reken [folio 243b] ynge of hem be-for god;
[649] Nowe commeþ Iangelynge þat may noȝt come wiþe|owten sinne as seiþe Salomon; It is a signe of aperte folye; [650] And þerefore; a philosophre saide; Whan a man asked hyme howe men schold plese þe peple; And he answarde; Do goode werkes; & speke fewe Iangelinges;
[651] After þis comeþ þe sinne of Iapes þat bien deuels apes ffor þei maken folke to lawhe att her Iaperye as folkes done att þe gaudes of an hape; Suche Iapes defendeþ seint Poule; [652] Loke howe þat vertuouse wordes & holy; conuerten hem
