(a) Any of several types of small, fleshy or sclerotic excrescences occurring at various locations in or on a human or an animal body, an unsightly growth, esp. on the face, a wart, mole [often difficult to distinguish from (b)]; also, ?a polyp [quot. a1400]; ~ wort, q.v.; (b) any of several types of small, highly localized morbid skin eruptions, lesions, raised sores, etc., a boil, pimple, pustule; also, a cyst of the eyelid, sty, chalazion; a cyst or boil of the external ear canal, furuncle; ?a tumor or cyst in the parotid glands; (c) a nipple [perh. through confusion of L papilla with L papula]; ?also, the very tip of a woman’s breast [2nd quot.].
