(a) The plot of land on which a house stands, often with an enclosed garden and often including the building itself, a homestead; also, a vacant plot of land usable for a homestead [quot. a1500]; ~ and (et) croft; (b) a hillock; an elevated piece of land; (c) in cpds.: ~ garth, the yard of a toft; ~ lond, = (a); ~ mol, a rent on a toft; ~ soke-man, ?a tenant of a toft held in socage; (d) in surnames and place names [see Smith PNElem. 2.181].
