Middle English Dictionary Entry
thane def. art. & adj.
Entry Info
Forms | thane def. art. & adj. Also (chiefly early) þanne, (SWM or SW) þene & (early) þon(n)e, þana, þæne, (SWM) þænne, þeone, (chiefly SWM) þenne & þan, þon, (SW) þun, (chiefly early SWM or SW) þen. |
Etymology | OE þone, þane, þæne, þene, þonne, þan, þon, sg. acc. masc. of sē̆. ME thane almost always occurs with descendants of OE masc. nouns, but there are occasional instances with descendants of OE neut. nouns (e.g., quots. a1131, a1375 in 1a.(a)) and OE fem. nouns (e.g., quots. 1122 in 1c.(a), 1122 in 2.(a)) and with borrowings of OF and ML nouns, both masc. (e.g., quots. c1275, 2nd, in 1a.(a), c1300 SLeg. in 2.(e)) and fem. (e.g., quot. c1450 in 2.(e)). In many texts of the 13th cent. and later, thane and than def. art. & adj.(1) begin to fall together, partly because of frequent elision of the -e in thane before a word beginning with a vowel. |
