(a) Of a person, deity, city: emotionally distressed, unhappy, sad, grieving; anxious; of the heart, spirit, etc.: troubled, grieved; (b) expressing sorrow; (c) causing sorrow, grievous, lamentable; also, worthy of pity, pitiful, piteous; ~ sword, fig. a sword of sorrow; (d) associated with sorrow, filled with or accompanied by sadness; (e) as noun: a sorrowful person, one who grieves, one who is unhappy; also, sorrowful people; (f) as adv.: sadly.
