Record Details
- Title
- A view of the obelisk erected under the Liberty-Tree in Boston on the rejoicings for the repeal of the ---- Stamp-Act / Paul Revere, sculp.
- Date
- 1766.
- Notes
- A schematic rendering of the illuminated obelisk erected on Boston Common in celebration of the repeal of the Stamp Act. Each of the four sides of the obelisk is shown with an image that portrays (in allegorical terms) one phase in the struggle against the Stamp Act. The names of sixteen English "worthy patriots" who befriended the colonies are indicated by initials next to their portraits, which are also on the obelisk.
- Title continues with the text that clarifies the subject of each side of the obelisk: "To every lover of liberty, this plate is humbly dedicated by her true-born sons in Boston, New England. 1st. America in distress apprehending the total loss of liberty. 2d. She implores the aid of her patrons. 3d. She endures the conflict for a short season. 4th and has her liberty restor'd by the royal hand of George the Third."
- Probably a 19th century restrike of the original plate.
