Title
Opposition's attempt to raise the dead / J.S., f.
Date
[1788]
Notes
Fox, Sheridan, and Baron Powys are engaged in opening a large rectangular tomb inscribed "[H]ere lie [t]he remains [of] Mr. F--'s India Bill." Fox (left), facing the inscribed end of the tomb, lifts the covering slab with both hands; the head of a skeleton looks out, holding a crown in one hand, the other grasps the edge of the tomb and a cere-cloth inscribed "Patronage." Sheridan and Powys both blow trumpets from which issue scrolls with inscriptions reading, "It was opposed by a senseless yell," and "A bold measure characteristic of the movers mind," respectively. Above Fox is a bell inscribed "Vox Populi," from which issues a scoll reading, "Lie still if you're wise you'll be d--d if you rise." Cf. George.
