June Meeting, 2000 contributed to the strength and breadth of these collections. He has been an active supporter of LILA (Lavender Information and Library Association), serving as a resource person for the history of gay rights. For forty years, Mr. Weber has assisted generations of faculty and students and has been the face of the University to a multitude of scholars from around the world who used the Labadie Collection. He is an individual of remarkable honesty, compassion, and intelligence, who will be deeply missed by his colleagues in the library and the University. Vice President Tedesco submitted a memorial statement for Stuart Sankey, professor of music (double bass). Stuart Sankey, professor of music (double bass) died in Ann Arbor on May 1, 2000. He was born in Los Angeles on New Year's Eve in 1927. He studied at The Julliard School where he received his B.S. and M.S. degrees and then joined the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin. He became a faculty member at Indiana University in 1980 and was named professor of music at the University of Michigan in 1986. During summers from 1951 until his death, Professor Sankey was a member of the artist faculty at the Aspen Music School and Festival in Colorado. He also held guest teaching appointments at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and the Toho Academy in Tokyo. Professor Sankey was a master performer on the double bass, and in his work at Aspen, Texas, Indiana, and Michigan he was an equally masterful teacher. His former students currently can be found in very many symphony orchestras throughout the United States, including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and as faculty members in such prestigious institutions as the Eastman School of Music, Northwestern University, and many others. Professor Sankey was the author of numerous articles on double bass performance and revised and edited the Simandle New Method for String Bass, which is by far the most widely-used teaching method for the bass. He transcribed a great amount of music for use by double bassists and was for much of his life also active as a composer. The Regents acknowledge his death with sadness and offer sincere condolences to his wife, Li Ting, and daughters, Laura and Lili. Degrees.
