January Meeting, 2000 Phillip A. Fellin, Ph.D., professor of social work, and former dean, School of Social Work, retired from active faculty status on December 31, 1999. Professor Fellin received his A.B. degree in sociology from St. Benedict's College in Atchison, Kansas, in 1953 and his M.S.W. degree from St. Louis University in 1957. He earned his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan in 1959 and 1962, respectively, and joined the University of Michigan School of Social Work as an associate professor and director of field instruction in 1965. He was promoted to professor of social work in 1968. In 1969, Professor Fellin was appointed assistant dean and in 1971 was named dean of the school, a post that he held for 10 years. Professor Fellin attained national prominence as a social work educator and scholar. Beginning in 1975, he served a three-year term as chair of the Commission for Accreditation of the Council on Social Work Education. He systematized field instruction and created a much closer relationship between classroom content and students' field activities. He increased the use of social science content and research in social work education to the benefit of his students. His research and scholarly writing focused on issues of policy, community-based care, the evaluation of diversity within schools of social work and equal opportunities for women in social work education. His most recent work has been in issues of multiculturalism, its definition and conceptualization. In addition to his dean appointment, Professor Fellin assumed leadership roles in other capacities. He was elected to represent the School of Social Work on the University of Michigan Senate Assembly. Within the School of Social Work, he served on the administration curriculum program, casework curriculum program, honors committee, and practice skill training task force. In 1981, he was chair of the advisory committee to the executive board of the University of Michigan Children's Center. He was known as a superior and simulating teacher who was able to bring together concepts and research findings for his students. The Regents now salute this distinguished faculty member by naming Phillip A. Fellin professor emeritus of social work and dean emeritus. Ann E. Larimore, Ph.D., professor of geography and women's studies in the Residential College, College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, retired from active faculty status on December 31, 1999. Professor Larimore received her B.A. degree from Wellesley College in 1952 and her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Chicago in 1955 and 1958, respectively. From 1961-66, she taught at Rutgers, Eastern Michigan, and Michigan State universities. Professor Larimore joined the University of Michigan faculty in 1966 as a lecturer in the Department of Geography and in the Residential College. She was promoted to associate professor in 1969 and professor in 1972. Since 1982, she has held a joint appointment as a professor of geography and women's studies both in the Residential College Social Science Program and in the LS&A Women's Studies Program. She served as associate director of the Residential College from 1975-80 and from 1981-88. Throughout her academic career, cultural diversity has been at the forefront of Professor Larimore's concerns. Even before the word "multiculturalism" became widely utilized, she was studying the diverse cultural geography of East Africa and West Asia, and she became an expert on the culturally variegated and complex society of Turkey. Over the years, her areas of interest have also incorporated multicultural feminist teaching strategies and philosophy, as well as interdisciplinary approaches to teaching 191
