Proceedings of the Board of Regents (1960-1963)

724 MAY MEETING, 1962 recommendations as indicated in the President's statement. The motion was seconded by Regent Power and unanimously adopted. Regent Brablec asked whether the University's reply to the Compliance Report under the Nondiscrimination Provisions of U. S. government contracts (p. 646) had elicited any acknowledgment from Washington. The Vice-President in charge of business and finance said there had been none to date. The President reminded the Regents that the University seldom had waited as long as it has been waiting this year for action from the legislature concerning its allocation of monies to the University for the new budget. "At this time," he said, "we still have been given no definite time when we may expect an answer." He said when the clarification on the issue develops, he would notify the Regents and call them to a special meeting in order to plan the University's budget for 1963-64. Athletic Facilities: After careful and detailed consideration of the report of the Plant Student Fees not Expansion Committee of the Board in Control of Intercollegiate AthTo Be Raised To Provide letics (p. 668), the Regents declined the request that student fees be increased to raise additional funds for the enlargement of athletic facilities. The further suggestion that funds be raised through the sale of athletic coupon books was referred back to the Board in Control, since the Board in Control has the power, within its delegated authority, to offer such books for sale. Regents Goebel and Matthaei voted against the motion. It was further agreed that the Vice-President in charge of business and finance would make a study of the maintenance cost of the athletic plant and of what might be entailed in transferring the maintenance cost of intramural facilities from the athletic budget to the general fund budget. G. E. Bursley: Gilbert E. Bursley, Assistant Director of the Development Council, To Run for was granted permission to participate in the state electoral campaign this fall as a candidate for re-election to the state legislature from this district (R.P., 1957-60, p. 1164). It is understood that when his candidacy is announced, he will request a leave of absence for such time as is required for his campaign, and if elected, for his service in Lansing during the legislative session. H. L. Bretton: Henry L. Bretton, Associate Professor of Political Science, was To Run for granted permission to participate in the state electoral campaign this fall as a candidate for election to the state legislature from this district. It is understood that Professor Bretton, upon announcing his candidacy, will request a leave of absence for such time as is required for his campaign, and if elected, for his service in Lansing during the legislative session. All of the above actions were by unanimous vote except where otherwise expressly stated. Regent Goebel's travel expense voucher for attendance at Regents' meetings and conferences in December, 1961, and February, March, and April, 1962, in the amount of $58.41, was approved.
