Curtis, as Professor of Dermatology and Syphilology, was changed from full time to part time, effective when he returns to active duty. February 1, 1942 (p. 678). The sum of $5,000 was set aside to carry on a program of courses to prepare students for tasks confronting them in the service of the United States. This appropriation was made in accordance with the recommendation of the University Committee on National Defense, of which Dr. Louis A. Hopkins is Chairman and Dr. Chester S. Schoepfle is Co-ordinator. The appropriation is designated National Defense Courses. The following leaves of absence were voted: Joseph R. Hayden, James Orin Murfin Professor of Political Science and Chairman of the Department of Political Science, University year 1941-1942, without salary, in order that he may serve as a member of the Board of Analysts of the Federal Office of the Co-ordinator of Information. Further, during the absence of Professor Hayden, Professor E. S. Brown was appointed to serve as Acting Chairman of the Department of Political Science. Elmore S. Pettyjohn, Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering, first semester 1941-1942, without salary. Professor Pettyjohn has been ordered to active sea duty in his capacity of Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy. B. A. de Vere Bailey, Assistant in the Division of the Orient, Museum of Anthropology, through December 31, 1941, with salary. This action adds $450 to the Museum budget and terminates Mr.. Bailey's appointment.
