Proceedings of the Board of Regents (1939-1942)

ANNUAL JUNE MEETING, 1941 665 Professor Joseph R. Hayden was designated as the James Orin Murfin Professor of Political Science, beginning with the University year 1941-1942, with salary of $6,200 per year, $6,000 of which is expected to be derived from the James Orin Murfin endowment fund and $200 from the regular budget of the Department of Political Science (p. 351). In place of the "Institute of Archaeological Research," (R.P. 1929 -1932, p. 602), the Regents set up a research committee for the Museum of Art and Archaeology. The duties of this committee are specifically limited to the formulation and administration of plans for the study and publication of the University's archaeological materials from the Mediterranean lands and the Near East, including the papyrological and palaeographical collections, to the acquisition of similar materials, and to the promotion of archaeological excavations in those regions. It is expected that the Librarian will refer to this committee all requests for the use and study of the collections mentioned, with a view of publication, and the committee shall be empowered to rule on such requests. To this committee the Board appointed, on recommendation of the President, the Dean of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, the Dean of the Graduate School, the University Librarian, Dr. F. E. Robbins, Professors Campbell Bonner and A. E. R. Boak, Associate Professor Clark Hopkins, and Professor Emeritus Henry A. Sanders. According to Sec. 30.01 of the Bylaws the Director of the Museum of Art and Archaeology at present Professor John G. Winter, is a member of this committee ex officio. Leave of absence on half pay for the University year 1941-1942 (p. 657) was voted to Assistant Professor Edward B. Greene to permit him to accept a temporary position as a personnel research technician in the State Technical Advisory Service of the Federal Security Board. Professor Greene will, during this absence; also continue work on his text concerning the analysis of clerical skills. On recommendation of the Executive Committee of the College of Engineering, the Department of Geodesy and Surveying will, by direction of the Regents, cease to exist as a separate department from July 1, 1941.
