On recommendation of the President the following preamble and resolutions were adopted (p. 505): WHEREAS, Harrison McAllister Randall, a graduate of the University of Michigan (Ph.B., 1893, A.M., 1894, Ph.D., 1902), for forty years a member of its faculty, and for the past twenty-two years Chairman of the Department of Physics, will attain the age of seventy years on December 17, 1940, and therefore become eligible for retirement from his active duties at the end of the present semester, and WHEREAS, Professor Randall's abilities as a scholar, his wise judgment, unusual administrative ability, and fine personal qualities have combined to increase greatly the prestige of the Department of which he has so long been the administrative head, and to win for it an enviable standing among scientists in this and other countries, therefore, be it Resolved, That the Regents of the University of Michigan extend their sincere thanks and congratulations to Professor Randall for his distinguished service, and that they confer upon him the title Professor Emeritus of Physics and recommend him for the usual retiring allowance, as of February 14, 1941, and be it further Resolved, That Professor Randall be invited to continue to make use of the University's library and laboratory facilities in carrying forward his personal researches. The Board accepted with thanks a contribution from Mr. James Baird, at present in Tucson, Arizona, in the amount of $1,448.70, to bring the total of the James Baird Endowment fund up to $23,000 (R.P. 1929-1932, p. 602 and p. 96). The President reported that Mr. Charles Baird had again made a contribution of $100 toward defraying expenses for the children's Christmas at the Hospital. This gift, continuing the Charles Baird Christmas fund, was accepted with thanks (p. 176). The Board accepted with regret the resignation of Dr. Lloyd F. Catron, Assistant Professor of Pathology, in order that he might accept another position in Akron, Ohio. The resignation becomes effective December 31, 1940. Professor Ransom S. Hawley was appointed Chairman of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the College of Engineering, effective with the beginning of the second semester of the present University year, in addition to his duties as Professor, to succeed the late Professor John E. Emswiler (p. 432). The salary of Professor Hawley was increased, beginning with the second semester, from $4,500 per year to $5,500 per year. This salary change is met out of money remaining in the budget following the death of Professor Emswiler. Leave of absence with pay, due to illness, was voted to Professor John A. Van den Broek from November 25, 1940, to January 6, 1941. Leave of absence with pay, due to illness, was voted to William Telfer, Instructor in the Working, Treating, and Welding of Steel in the Department of Metal Processing, from December 4, 1940, to January 13, 1941.
