Proceedings of the Board of Regents (1939-1942)

404 SEPTEMBER MEETING, 1940 From Typothetae-Franklin Association, Detroit, through Mr. Cyril Means, the financing of the publication of a booklet entitled "Historic Examples of American Printing" for the Clements Library; also 2,500 copies of the publication for the Clements Library From the Upjohn Company, Kalamazoo, $100 for the investigation of Stilboestral under the direction of Dr. Norman Kretzschmar The Secretary filed notice of the following provisions in the will of the late former Regent James O. Murfin (p. 375). Under paragraph 2 Judge Murfin provided for the establishment of a trust fund of $40,000, the income therefrom to be paid to his cousin, Mrs. Eliza A. Ash, of Los Angeles, California, as long as she shall live. On her death the residue of the trust is bequeathed to the University under the following provisions: At her death I bequeath the same to the Regents of the University of Michigan, the income from which is to be used by them as a loan fund for needy and deserving male students. It is my wish that the Regents of the University of Michigan use the income of this fund to be loaned, under their supervision, direction and regulation, to such deserving male students who otherwise would not be able to acquire an education. I, naturally, do not wish this income devoted entirely to boys of athletic ability, nor do I wish any boy because he has athletic ability to be denied the facilities of this fund. It is difficult to express in concrete language my views as to how I would like to have this handled. I am willing to leave it to such rules and regulations as the Board of Regents of the University of Michigan may from time to time prescribe. I hope, however, that the administrators of this fund will always bear in mind my frequently expressed views as to the difference between a boy who goes to college and the boy who is sent to college; the one I want to help, for the other I have very little use Under paragraph 3 of his will Judge Murfin bequeathed his entire law library to the University. Professor Hobart Coffey, Law Librarian, filed a statement to the effect that a conservative estimate of the monetary value of Mr. Murfin's law library would be $2,500. These bequests were accepted by the Regents in accordance with their terms and conditions and with an expression of gratitude for the benefaction. The President placed on record the third and fourth clauses from the will of the late Effie M. Griffith, together with comments as here recorded (R.P. 1936-1939, p. 779): Third: All of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, wherever situate, I give, devise and bequeath to The Regents of the University of Michigan, a Constitutional Corporation, for the following uses and purposes, that is to say: (a) I desire that there shall be created a scholarship known and designated as the "Joseph and Esther Griffith Memorial Loan Scholarship." The scholarship thus created shall be administered by The Regents of the University of Michigan, as follows: (1) The principal and the income from said fund and all proceeds derived therefrom to be loaned by the said The Regents of the University of Michigan in reasonable sums of one hundred dollars ($100.00) or more, to any one person, to women students in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts, in the Law School or in the Medical School of said University, who have reached their junior or senior year and who are doing work along economic, civic, sociological and scientific lines. (2) All loans made are to be evidenced by the notes of the borrowers, which notes in every case shall be made payable to the said The Regents of the University of Michigan. (3) The rate of interest and such other matters pertaining to such loans shall be left entirely in the discretion of The Regents of the University of Michigan. Fourth: I hereby nominate and appoint Alexander G. Ruthven, President of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan, or his successor, executor
