Hudson Professor of English History, died, after a brief illness, on June 21, 1940,
in the sixty-seventh year of his age. Through his History of England and Greater
Britain, in its various revisions and editions, Professor Cross's name was a familiar
one to students in many universities and colleges; to hundreds who passed through
his classroom in this University during the past forty-one years, he was a skilled,
kindly, and conscientious teacher, unusually mindful of the interests of the individuals who came to him for instruction. His wide and accurate knowledge of his
chosen field, evidenced by his many books, articles, and reviews, was generally
recognized among historians here and abroad. His colleagues in the University
faculty had high regard for his counsel and co-operation in carrying out the educational purposes of the institution; they valued him, too, as a delightful companion, a staunch friend, and a man steadfast in his adherence to an honest and
wholesome way of life. The Regents of the University of Michigan conceive it to
be due to memory of a distinguished, loyal, and much beloved member of the
faculty thus to record in their Proceedings their appreciation of the services of
Professor Arthur Lyon Cross and their heartfelt sorrow at his untimely passing.
