Proceedings of the Board of Regents (1939-1942)

SEPTEMBER MEETING, 1940 385 compensation at the rate of $5,500 for the University year. No addition to the budget is necessitated by this action, as funds can be had from the Salary budget of the Department. August 6, 1940 Present, President Ruthven, Regent Cook, and Regent Shields. At the request of Dean Albert C. Furstenberg, the committee changed the status of the appointment of George Hoyt Servis, M.S.E., for the University year 1940-1941, from Research Assistant to Assistant in the Department of Physiology, Medical School, with an increase in his salary for that period of from $1,000 to $1,200. This action does not necessitate any addition to the budget as funds are already provided in the Salary budget of the Department of Physiology. August 9, 1940 Present, President Ruthven, Regent Cook, and Regent Shields. The committee approved the payment to Robert 0. Morgan, Council Secretary and Assistant General Secretary of the Alumni Association, of certain traveling expenses incurred in a trip from Ann Arbor to Chicago and the Pacific Coast, in connection with the solicitation of subscriptions for the Frederick G. Novy Fellowship Fund for Research in Bacteriology, which resulted in additions to the fund of approximately $4,000. The total expense account of $300.95 was approved with the understanding that the present interest accumulation of $212.29 will be paid to Mr. Morgan forthwith and the balance of the total when earned by the Novy fund (R.P. 1936-1939, p. 413). August 12, 1940 Present, President Ruthven, Regent Cook, and Regent Shields. The committee canceled the leave of absence granted to Dr. Edgar A. Kahn, Associate Professor of Surgery, for the period from July 1, 1940, to December 31, 1940, as of July 29. Dr. Kahn was granted leave of absence to permit him to serve with the American Red Cross in France. Conditions, however, prevented the utilization of his services by the Red Cross and he, therefore, returned to his duties at the University on July 29 (p. 367). August 12, 1940 Present, President Ruthven, Regent Cook, and Regent Shields. The committee appropriated and added the sum of $3,000 to Director of Plant Extension, Salaries, to provide a total salary of $10,200 for Professor Lewis M. Gram for the fiscal year 1940-1941. This action was taken because no provision was made for the continuance of Professor Gram's salary beyond that of $6,200 appearing on the Salary budget of the Department of Civil Engineering and $1,000 as salary for his position of Director of Plant Extension. The building program for the present year will necessitate that he devote as much time as was necessary during the various building operations of the past year. August 14, 1940 Present, President Ruthven, Regent Cook, and Regent Shields. The committee accepted with appropriate thanks to the donor a grant of $250 from the International Pulverizing Corporation of Moorestown, New Jersey, for the establishment during the Summer Session of 1940 of the Heterocyclics Research Fellowship, to which John Batiste Data, M.S.Pharm., is hereby appointed. It is understood that this project is to be under the direction of Dr. Frederick F. Blicke of the College of Pharmacy. August 14, 1940 Present, President Ruthven, Regent Cook, and Regent Shields. At the request of Dr. Edward W. Blakeman, the committee appropriated and added the sum of $75 to the Salary account of the budget of the Counselor in Religious Education, to provide a total salary of $900 for an assistant for the period from September 15, 1940, to June 15, 1941. Edward George Groesbeck, A.M., is hereby appointed to this position. Although $900 was originally provided in the budget of 1940-1941 for this purpose, it was found necessary to engage an assistant for the summer, and his salary depleted the item by the amount requested. August 16, 1940 Present, President Ruthven, Regent Cook, and Regent Shields. The committee accepted with grateful appreciation and in accordance with its terms the offer of the Ethyl Gasoline Corporation of Detroit to renew, for
