The President notified the Regents that Professor Clarence Linton
Meader retired, for age, as of August 31, 1938. The Board adopted
the following resolutions:
WHEREAS, Clarence Linton Meader, Professor of General Linguistics, upon
August 12, 1938, reached the age of seventy years and therefore has become
eligible for retirement, and
WHEREAS, Professor Meader, a graduate of this University in the class of 1891,
who likewise received here the degree Doctor of Philosophy in 1902, has for
forty-five years, as teacher of Latin, Sanskrit, Russian, Comparative Philology,
and General Linguistics, served as a member of the faculty with distinction to
himself and to the institution, and with profit to the many students who have
been privileged to work in his classes; therefore be it
Resolved, That the Regents of the University of Michigan express to Professor Meader their cordial congratulations upon the completion of a teaching
career of unusual length and fruitfulness and their appreciation of his loyal and
valuable services to this University, and be it further
Resolved, That the title of Professor Emeritus of General Linguistics be
conferred upon Professor Meader, and that he be recommended to the Carnegie
Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching for the normal retiring allowance, to
begin August 31, 1938.
The Assistant Secretary reported for record that Professor Meader
is entitled to a total retiring allowance of $2,691.60 annually, derived
from the following sources:
Carnegie Foundation................. $1,000.00
Carnegie Corporation.................. 359.40
Supplemental annuity policy............ 364.20
Older Faculty Members Retirement Fund. 968.00
Total..........................$2,691.60
The Regents accepted with regret the resignation of John Morris
Dorsey, M.D., Associate Professor of Psychiatry in the Medical School,
to be effective October 31, 1938.
The Board accepted with regret the resignation of Assistant Professor Sanford B. Meech of the Department of English, College of
Literature, Science, and the Arts, effective as of June 30, 1938.
Routine appointments, all within the budget, were approved as
follows (p. 610):
