Proceedings of the Board of Regents (1936-1939)

604 JULY MEETING, 1938 Bureau of Co-operation with Educational Institutions, into the year 1938-1939. This was done because of need for additional traveling expenses now foreseen. July 6, 1938 Present, President Ruthven, Regent Beal, and Regent Shields. On recommendation by Librarian Bishop, the committee granted leave of absence, without salary, to Mirs. Nellie T. Thornton, in Charge of Graduate Reading Room No. 3, General Library, for the period from September 19, 1938, to June 30, 1939. This leave of absence will enable Mrs. Thornton to accompany Professor J. E. Thornton of the Department of Engineering English when he is on his sabbatical leave, request for which will be acted upon by the Regents at the meeting to be held on July 29, 1938. The necessity for action at this time arose from the fact that Dr. Bishop will have to make arrangements to take care of Mrs. Thornton's work and to adjust the vacation periods of others on the staff. July 6, 1938 Present, the President, Regent Beal, and Regent Shields. The committee approved, without precedent, the payment of a 5% contribution toward the premium on Dr. William Harris Wynne's old-age annuity during the year 1938-1939. Dr. Wynne was appointed Associate Professor of Economics for one year in place of Professor Remer, on leave without salary, at the June 17, 1938, meeting of the Board (p. 568). Consideration of payment of the 5% on Dr. Wynne's annuity was inadvertently not given attention at the June meeting. July 9, 1938 Present, the President, Regent Beal, and Regent Shields. Under circumstances growing out of a resurvey and correction of error thereby, with consequent change in the description from that appearing in the original contract of sale, the committee approved warranty deed to Frances Saley conveying the following property (R.P. 1932-1936, p. 495, R. E. 80-A): Parts of lots number fifty-seven and fifty-eight of White's Addition to the City of Ann Arbor, more particularly described as follows: Beginning on the east line of South State Street two hundred thirty and fifty-four one hundredths (230.54) feet north of the northeast corner of South State Street and Dewey Avenue; thence continuing northerly along the east line of South State Street, forty-eight (48) feet; thence easterly at right angles to State Street, a distance of one hundred and thirty-two (132) feet; thence southerly parallel to State Street forty-eight (48) feet; thence westerly one hundred thirty-two (132) feet to the place of beginning; being parts of lots number fifty-seven (57) and fifty-eight (58) of White's Addition to the City of Ann Arbor. July 11, 1938 Present, the President, Regent Beal, and Regent Shields. The committee appropriated not to exceed $2,000 to cover the cost of certain alterations as requested by Dean E. H. Kraus, as follows: The north room on the first floor of Mason Hall, formerly used by the Editorial Office, is to be converted into a large general office and six private offices for the use of the student counselors of the Literary College. This will involve moving the present postal carrier's quarters to a new location, namely, the space in University Hall now occupied by the office of Dr. Carl Rufus. The total estimated cost of these changes will be $1,065. The Dictaphone Station in the basement of James B. Angell Hall will be moved into space vacated by the Sorting and Tabulating Station, making available one large classroom. Also the office formerly occupied by Mrs. Church, Director of the Horace H. Rackham Fund, will be converted into a classroom. These changes will be made within an estimated cost of $859. July 12, 1938 Present, the President, Regent Beal, and Regent Shields. The committee authorized transfer of $900 from the Woodward Avenue Lease fund to the Centennial Celebration fund to provide salary for Mrs. Anne M. Withrow for the period from July 1, 1938, to December 31, 1938 only, in her work on the University of Michigan Encyclopedia. Tuly 15, 1938 Present, the President, Regent Beal, and Regent Shields. The committee gave authority to the Vice-President and Secretary to sign a receipt for a final settlement with the representatives of the estate of the late Joseph A. Bartholomew of Naples, New York, who died in 1912 and whose wife, until her death in January 1938, had the income from his property. The settle
