The President filed a communication from eight officers of various
student bodies urging that certain steps be taken with the hope and
purpose of reducing the scale of room rents paid by the student body.
This communication was referred to the Student and Alumni Relations
Committee (Regents Cram, Hemans, and Shields) in conference with
Deans Bursley, Lloyd, and Anderson, with request that a report
should in due course be made back to the Board.
The sum of $705 was added to the Visiting Nurse Current Expense
account of the Division of Hygiene and Public Health (p. 223).
Regent Cook presented an estimate of income and a tentative
budget, in round figures, for the fiscal year 1938-1939. The Board
voted authority to prepare and present for consideration of the Regents a detailed budget within these limits.
The following additional by-law was adopted, to be put into
effect if and when the proper time should arrive, and under such
conditions to be incorporated into the new edition of the By-Laws
now in preparation, in proper location:
The office of Provost is hereby created. The Provost shall aid the President
by performing such of the President's functions as shall from time to time be
delegated by him or by the Board of Regents.
The following resolution was adopted:
Resolved, That notice be given to the Ann Arbor Press that it must harmonize its difficulties with its employees within ten days following this notice as these
difficulties are involving the University; otherwise prompt steps will be taken
by the University to cancel the present printing contract between the Ann Arbor
Press and the University.
All of the above actions were by unanimous vote except where
otherwise expressly stated.
The Board adjourned to 2 P.M., Friday, April 29, 1938.
