Proceedings of the Board of Regents (1936-1939)

JANUARY MEETING, 1938 433 Actions of the Operating Committee were approved and ratified in accordance with the minutes of the committee as follows (p. 409): December 6, 1937 The committee appropriated the sum of $25 as an addition to the Administration account "State University Association," making the total available $50 instead of $25 as originally appropriated by the Regents when the budget was fixed. The dues of the National Association of State Universities have been increased from $25 to $50 a year, necessitating this increase (p. 432). December 14, 1937 The committee approved an addition to the Current account of the Bureau of Coiperation with Educational Institutions in the amount of $125 to provide funds for the publication in permanent form of a list of reference books and magazines for use in the small high-school libraries of the State where a trained librarian is usually not available. This material was first mimeographed and distributed in the fall of 1936, and has proved to be so useful that Miss Edith Thomas in charge of Library Extension Service and her staff have rearranged the material and brought it up to date so that it will be useful for several years in the future. The standing committees of the Board were recast as follows (R.P. 1932-1936, p. 751): I. EXECUTIVE IV. W. Smith, Vice-President and Secretary, I have made an examination of the receipts and disbursements of the Publication Fund established by the late Regent William L. Clements. Mr. Smith acted as trustee of this fund. A certificate was obtained from the Ann Arbor Savings and Commercial Bank, successor to the Farmers and Mechanics Bank, the depository, stating that the deposits totaling $13,506.02 as recorded in the pass book were in agreement with their records. The total disbursements including returned receipt items of $27.75 were $13,506.02. Of this sum $113.28 was turned over to the Board of Regents on June 4, 1935, and represented the balance in the account at that time. All disbursements were adequately supported by vendors' invoices and other data. Very truly yours, December 17, 1937 R. P. BRIGGS, C.P.A. The Secretary filed a tabulation of names on the payroll of the University for the month of November, 1937, showing 4,843 names as compared with 4,643 names in November, 1936 (p. 161). The following contracts, supplemental contracts, and purchase orders made or accepted by the Department of Engineering Research were placed on record (p. 411): Contracts With the Dow Chemical Company, Midland, for study of theory of evaporator design; at an estimated cost of $500 With the Michigan Alkali Company, Wyandotte, for studies of calcium carbonate as a coating material; at an estimated cost of $5,000
