Proceedings of the Board of Regents (1936-1939)

OCTOBER MEETING, 1937 399 Resolved, That the Secretary of the Trustees of the Alumni Fund be authorized to transfer from the Alumni Fund to the custody of the Board of Regents of the University of Michigan, as a separate trust fund, under proper name, and with the same provisions for its administration as have always governed it, the item covered by the grant in 1921 of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Coblentz, in the amount of one thousand dollars. In explanation of the purposes of the Coblentz fund it should be recorded here that the fund was established by the donors in memory of their son, Howard B. Coblentz, a member of the law class of 1918 who enlisted while a student and sacrificed his life in the World War. The donors provided that the income from the fund is to be awarded at the close of each college year, by the Faculty of the Law School, to that student member of the Michigan Law Review editorial staff whose work on the Review during such year has in the opinion of the authorities of the Law School excelled that of his fellow student members upon the Board of this publication. The President notified the Regents that Mr. William P. Harris, Jr., of Detroit, had contributed the sum of $425 to be added to the William P. Harris, Jr., Research fund in the Museum of Zoology (p. 213). This gift was accepted with thanks. The President further notified the Regents that through Dean Alice C. Lloyd an anonymous donor had contributed the sum of $40 to constitute the Mary A. Cabot Award for 1937-1938. This award is to be made this year-and in future years if it is renewed by the donor as is expected-to a young woman majoring in music who has shown outstanding abilities in that field and who is in need of financial assistance. It may be withheld in any year when in the judgment of the Dean of Women no one adequately meets these qualifications and in that case will increase the sum available the following year. The purpose of this award is to honor the memory of Mrs. Mary A. Cabot, who during her residence in Ann Arbor was keenly interested in the group of women studying music and who gave freely of her time and energy in assisting them. This gift was accepted with thanks and in accordance with the terms specified. Mr. Albert Kahn of Detroit was named as architect for the new Neuropsychiatric Institute of the University Hospital provided under the hospital-building program of the state of Michigan. In recognition of the duties that have been performed by Professor Erich A. Walter in addition to those covered by his title, the Regents added to his title the words, "Chairman of Academic Counselors in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts." The following were named the Executive Committee of the Summer Session for the biennium 1937-1939 (R.P. 1932-1936, p. 688): Director Louis A. Hopkins, Chairman ex officio, Dean Henry C. Anderson, Dean Henry M. Bates, Dean James B. Edmonson, Dean Edward H. Kraus, and Dean Clarence S. Yoakum. The sum of $500, payable from the Guggenheim Trust fund (Chair of Aeronautics) was added to the salary of Professor Felix W. Pawlowski for the year 1937-1938, making his total salary $3,500. There was placed on file, without other action, a letter addressed by Professor F. W. Pawlowski to President Ruthven under date of October 13.
