Proceedings of the Board of Regents (1936-1939)

JULY MEETING, 1937 339 The Board directed that in accordance with the action of the Board of Governors of the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies monthly payments from the income on the Mary A. Rackham Fund be made to a list of pensioners in accordance with the amount in each individual case, as furnished monthly to the Business Office of the University by Mrs. Mary A. Church. This authorization covers the fiscal year 1937-1938 (p. 221). The President presented a proposal received through Professor H. C. Anderson from a considerable number of members of the University Faculty proposing a plan under which they would supply the necessary funds to complete and furnish the rooms in the Michigan Union Addition in order that this part of the building might serve as quarters for the Faculty Club as originally intended. The Regents approved this proposal with the specific understanding that the Board would not be asked either to advance funds or supply credit, and secondly that the proposal should have the approval, at present and in the manner in which it shall be carried out, of the Michigan Union Board of Governors. The number of Alumni Undergraduate Scholarships (R.P. 1929 -1932, pp. 628-629) was increased from fifty to seventy-five, with such increase in the budget as may be necessary. The estimate is $3,000. The salary of Dr. William Lloyd Berridge, Assistant Mental Hygienist in the University Health Service, was increased from $3,000 to $4,000 a year, twelve-month basis for the year 1937-1938. The sum involved in this increase was added to the budget. The Secretary read to the Regents a letter dated July 12 addressed by Mr. Harold D. Smith, State Budget Director, to President Ruthven, with respect to House Bill No. 581 authorizing the Governor to make reductions, at his discretion, in appropriations made by the legislative session of 1937, and also read the acknowledgment thereof under date of July 14 pointing out that the University's budget for 1937-1938 under necessities frequently emphasized during the past six months had been adopted and announced July 3. The Regents took no action relative to the matters in question. The Board requested the Committee on Educational Policies to recommend a permanent plan for the administration of the School of Dentistry. All of the above actions were by unanimous vote except where otherwise expressly stated. The Board adjourned to Friday, September 24, at 3:30 P.M. SHIRLEY W. SMITH, Secretary
