SECOND MAY MEETING, 1939 939 May 4, 1939 With the approval of Professor Robert S. Ford, Director, and at the request of Dean C. S. Yoakum, the committee approved the transfer of the sum of $300 from the Research and Publications account of the budget of the Bureau of Government to the Current account of the budget of the Institute of Public and Social Administration (Social Work Curriculum), to provide for expenses for the remainder of the present fiscal year. May 9, 1939 The committee approved leave of absence, with pay, for Mrs. Lou Ransom, Diploma Clerk, for sixty days or approximately that period, due to necessity for emergency operation for appendicitis with resulting complications. It is expected that Mrs. Ransom will be able to return to work within that period. She went to the hospital April 26. May 12, 1939 To meet the office necessities of Dr. Karl Litzenberg, Director of Residence Halls, the committee appropriated the sum of $314.51 to cover the purchase of the following equipment: 1 typewriter...............$ 97.81 1 file.................... 32.20 1 dictaphone transcriber..... 184.50 $314.51 The following supplemental contracts and purchase orders made or accepted by the Department of Engineering Research were placed on file (p. 909): Supplements With The City of Toledo, for continuation of work on subsoil investigation for Lake Erie water supply, Project M-205; at an estimated cost of $500 (p. 909) With The Timken Roller Bearing Company, for continuation of work on determination of properties of steels for high-temperature applications, Project No. 842; at an estimated cost of $2,500 (p. 607) With The Dow Chemical Company, for continuation of work on the theory of evaporator design, Project M-151; at an estimated cost of $2,400 (p. 433) With The Dow Chemical Company, for continuation of work on the development of a nonaqueous heating medium to replace high-pressure steam, Project M-165; at an estimated cost of $1,000 (p. 463) With the Windcharger Company, for continuation of work on propellers, Project M-119-2; at an estimated cost of $2,000 (p. 236) With the Ferry-Morse Seed Company, for continuation of work on seed byproducts, Project No. 976; at an estimated cost of $1,500 (R. Chace Company, for six temperature-tensile tests on samples of thermostatic bimetals; at an estimated cost of $50 From the Ethyl Gasoline Corporation, for calibrating one road test, Friez anemometer assembly, and furnishing necessary equipment and assistance to install apparatus in Aeronautical Department wind tunnel; at an estimated cost of $25 From the Pennsylvania Salt Manufacturing Company, for examination of a failed pipe; at an estimated cost of $100 From the Department of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering, Campus, for qualitative spectrographic analysis of copper sample; at an estimated cost of less than $5 The following gifts were accepted in accordance with their terms and conditions and with a vote of thanks by the Board in each case: From the Earhart Foundation, $2,400 for the Architecture Creative Art fund for the University year 1939-1940 (p. 533) From Monsanto Chemical Company, St. Louis, Missouri, renewal of the Monsanto Chemical Works Research Fellowship, for 1939-1940, in the amount of $750, same to be assigned to the College of Pharmacy to be administered under the direction of Dr. Frederick F. Blicke (pp. 684 and 685)
