Proceedings of the Board of Regents (1936-1939)

884 SECOND MARCH MlEETING, 1939 unexpended in the Salary budget of the Department of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering, was transferred to the Current account of the Department. This amount becomes available because of the leave of absence, without salary, granted to Mark H. Cunningham, who was replaced by Martin D. Diem at a lower salary (p. 795). March 13, 1939 On recommendation by Professor G. E. Densmore and with the approval of Dean Kraus, the committee transferred the sum of $200 from the salary account to the Current expense account of the Department of Speech, to provide for necessary expenses for the remainder of the present University year. March 13, 1939 At the request of Dean Russell W. Bunting, the committee approved the payment of an additional $300 to Dr. Morris D. Mackoy, for the period from February 10 to June 30, 1939, to compensate him for additional work in the teaching of dental therapeutics during the second semester of the present University year. This amount is available from the unexpended portion of the salary originally allocated to Dr. U. Garfield Rickert, deceased (p. 789). March 15, 1939 The committee authorized the payment of $4.50 to Jeannette Noble, full-time stenographer in University Extension, for services in reporting an evening lecture for the Student Religious Association. The payment is to come out of regularly appropriated Religious Association funds. This action of the committee authorizing 'extra" payment to an employee on annual appointment is perhaps not strictly within the limitations of its field; but the committee assumed that in so small a matter The Regents would prefer not to have a formal request come to the meeting of the Board. March 15, 1939 Professor Hopkins, Director of the Summer Session, and Professor AMcMurry of the Department of Geography, and also Dean Yoakum, are convinced that for the next six months, more or less, the Department of Geography will need a full-time instead of a half-time secretary. The necessity for the extra service lies in the preparation for the Latin-American Institute and the Institute of Far Eastern Studies. This department has in fact been using the full time of this halftime secretary for a considerable period, though the Dictaphone Station has been paying for it. Under these circumstances the Operating Committee appropriated the sum of $300 into a special fund to provide the extra half time for the Department of Geography secretary for six months from March 1, or such portion of that period as the full-time service may be necessary. This amount was not added to the budget of the Department of Geography because if this latter course were followed it would give an incorrect impression of a reduction when the Geography budget is made up for next year. The President filed a letter of thanks from Professor Frederick W. Peterson, who is still ill in El Paso, Texas, for the leave of absence voted to him (p. 862). The sources of the retiring allowances of Professor Henry A. Sanders and Professor John H. Ehlers (pp. 829-830) were recorded as follows: Professor Henry A. Sanders: Carnegie Foundation...................................... $1,000.00 Carnegie Corporation..................................... 351.00 Supplemental Annuity Policy............................... 587.40 Older Faculty Members Retirement fund..................... 2,061.60 Total.............................................. $4,000.00 Professor John H. Ehlers: Carnegie Foundation...................................... $1,000.00 Carnegie Corporation..................................... 331.80 Supplemental Annuity Policy.............................. 276.36 Older Faculty Members Retirement fund..................... 520.84 Total.............................................. $2,129.00
