Proceedings of the Board of Regents (1936-1939)

FIRST FEBRUARY MEETING, 1939 845 Library, because of illness. The leave with pay for the month of March was voted in view of the fact that Miss Gebhart did not take the vacation to which she was entitled in 1938. Leave of absence without pay was approved for Mrs. Mabel Bush, Matron of the Women's Athletic Building, from February 6 through April 15, 1939. Leave of absence without pay was granted to Miss Bertha L. Shaw, Assistant in Charge of the Periodical Reading Room of the General Library, for the month of February with an extension at the discretion of Librarian Bishop. Annie Muir Macintyre was appointed Research Assistant in the Michigan Historical Collections at the rate of $1,600 a year, twelvemonth basis, for the period from March 6 to July 1, 1939. The salary for this period, $511.86, is to be paid from the Woodward Avenue Lease fund. The Board laid upon the table until the meeting of February 24 the University Council's recommendations for honorary degrees to be conferred during 1939 (p. 533). The Secretary placed on file a letter from Henry Ford, D.Eng.(hon.) thanking The Regents for the gift to the Edison Institute Museum of certain obsolete automotive and aeromotive specimens (p. 632). The Secretary presented a communication from Harlan A. Depew relative to circumstances attending the purchase by the University of a house and lot on the site of the new men's dormitory (Docket No. Mich. 1714-F, p. 843). No action was taken. The Board approved legal defense by the University, at the expense of the Department of Engineering Research, of the University's right to the name "profilograph" without danger of confusion growing out of other designations put forward for similar apparatus by other interests. Actions of the Executive Committee were approved as follows (p. 825): January 22, 1939 Present, President Ruthven, Regent Beal, and Regent Shields. On recommendation by Dean James B. Edmonson, with the approval of Dean C. S. Yoakum and Dr. James D. Bruce, the committee approved the transfer of the sum of $1,500 from Reserve for Adult Education Program to the Salary account of the Department of Education, School of Education, to provide salary at the rate of $3,000 a year, twelve-month basis, for the period from January 1, 1939, to June 30, 1939, for Elmie W. Mallory, A.M., hereby appointed Lecturer and Consultant in Family Relations. It is understood that this appointment is made in conjunction with the State Board of Control for Vocational Education and that the University will be reimbursed at the close of the present fiscal year to the extent of $1,125 by funds to be supplied from the George-Deen fund. January 23, 1939 Present, President Ruthven. Regent Beal, and Regent Shields. On recommendation by Dr. James D. Bruce and Professor Howard Y. McClusky, the committee approved the transfer of $1,000 from Reserve for Adult Education Program to the Salary account of the budget of Adult Education Program, as salary for Alvin Frederick Zander, M.S.P.H., Field Assistant, for the period from January 3, 1939, to June 30, 1939. With the approval of the Faculty Personnel Committee, Mr. Zander's appointment is hereby approved.
