826 JANUARY MEETING, 1939 January 3, 1939 At the request of Dean Russell W. Bunting, and with the approval of the Committee on Institutional Memberships, the committee continued, for an indefinite period, membership in the Medical Library Association, with yearly dues of $10 payable from the Current Expense account of the budget of the School of Dentistry (p. 139). January 12, 1939 At the request of Professor J. Raleigh Nelson, the committee appropriated the sum of $350 to the Current Expense account of the Office of the Dean of Students to provide operating expenses for the International Center to June 30, 1939. The President filed a copy of the Building Program calendar for the month of January, 1939. The Secretary filed a tabulation of names on the payroll of the University for the month of November, 1938, showing 5,066 names as compared with 4,843 names in November, 1937 (p. 433). The President filed a report of an accident, involving Dr. E. H. Eyster, which occurred January 7, 1939, in the Chemistry Laboratory. The following contracts, supplemental contracts, and purchase orders made or accepted by the Department of Engineering Research were placed on file (p. 789): Contracts With the Utilities Research Commission, Chicago, Illinois, for investigation to retard velocity of flame propagation in commercial gas; at an estimated cost of $3,000 With the Commonwealth Brass Corporation, Detroit, for an investigation of metal finish; at an estimated cost of $750 Supplements With the Ferry-Morse Seed Company, for continuation of research program, Project No. 976; at an estimated cost of $150 (R.P. 1932-1936, p. 666) With Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation, for continuation of research program, Project No. M189; at an estimated cost of $500 (p. 607) With The Dow Chemical Company, for continuation of research program, Project M151; at an estimated cost of not over $50 (p. 433) Purchase Orders From Ohio Ferro-Alloys Corporation, for analysis, by vacuum fusion method of four samples of ferrosilicon; at an estimated cost of from $100 to $125 From The Glenn L. Martin Company, for construction of a wind-tunnel model; at an estimated cost of $400 From the Universal-Cyclops Steel Corporation, for determination of high-temperature properties of a steel sample; at an estimated cost of less than $50 From the Universal-Cyclops Steel Corporation, for physical and metallographic examination of a piece of Cyclops No. 17-A metal at 18500 F.; at an estimated cost of less than $100 From Lonergan Manufacturing Company, for test of comparative velocities and temperatures on two oil-burning heaters; at an estimated cost of less than $200 From Michigan State Highway Department, for Brinell hardness determination, metallographic analysis, and chemical analysis for per-cent carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulphur, and silicon on snowplow and grades blade; at an estimated cost of $50 Gifts were received and accepted in accordance with their terms and conditions and with appropriate votes of thanks, as follows: From McGregor fund, through Renville Wheat, Secretary, notification to the effect that the Trustees of the Fund had appropriated the sum of $15,000 to the University toward the support of the Institute of Public and Social Administration during 1939 (p. 444). Payment of this amount will be made after October 1, 1939, unless otherwise requested by the University.
