836 JULY MEETING, 1917 The Secretary filed a statenent made up by Mr. Christensen, the Assistant Secretary, of the fund known as the Military Intelligence Bureau Account created by the Regents' appropriation of $2,500 at the meeting of March 30 (see page 7Io). This report showed total expenditures from the fund of $I,717.05, leaving a balance of $782.95, to which it was proposed to charge the traveling expense voucher, of Mr. Francis Bacon who has been in charge of the work of the Bureau, in the amount of $150.37. On motion of Regent Sawyer the whole question of the use of the remaining sum in this appropriation, should it be deemed wise by the Committee to use it, was referred with power to a Committee consisting of the President, Regent Beal, and the Secretary. Regent Hubbard read the following commulication from the Swenson Evaporator Company of Chicago:To the Regenlts of the Ulliv'rsity of Mlichigan. GENTLIE MI1N:On or about Miay 19, 1917, 1 made a verbal proposition to Assistant Professor W. L. Badger to furnish and install free of- expense to the University, certain machinery and apparatus appertaining to Chemical Engineering. This proposition was submitted to the Regents in a communication by Dean Cooley for consideration 5May 31, I917. On receipt of a copy of it I wrote Dean Cooley June 6th, stating our proposition at length. This letter, I am informed, was sent to the Regents for consideration June 22nd, being reached and considered the evening of June 26th. Dean Cooley informed me that the entire matter was referred to a special committee with power. In a conference with Regent Hubbard in Chicago, July 18, and in further conference with the President, Regent Hubbard, Dean Cooley and Professor Badger, in Ann Arbor, July i9th, the proposition was further discussed and the following conclusions reached, which were not covered in my previous letter: The University agrees to furnish suitable space and do any and all things necessary in fitting this space for.use as a laboratory in Chemical Engineering, and adapting it for the reception of the machinery and apparatus furnished by the Swenson Evaporator Company.
