American Ethnology in editing its various publications; an
author of distinguished merit, particularly in the field of the
discovery period of American history; a scholar whose
bibliographical researches and publications have placed him
among the foremost of investigators in the literature of
American history.

DOCTOR OF LAWS
DOCTOR WILLIAM CLARINCEI BRAISTIrI), a graduate of the
University of Michigan, College of Literature, Science, and
the Arts in the class of I883, Rear-Admiral and Surgeon
General of the United States Navy; an author of acknowledged merit in the field of naval affairs, including naval history; the man who above all others has secured for the
United States Navy training stations and hospitals unsurpassed in comfort and sanitary appliances.
The exigencies of the public service making it impossible for him to be present, this degree is conferred inl
absentia.
DOCTOR LIVINGSTON FARRAND, President of the University of Colorado. Distinguished as a scholar, particularly
in the field of anthropology, and as a wisely progress've
and forceful university administrator. For many years
the Executive Secretary of the National Association for the
Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis, he is eminently fitted
for the important work to which he has recently been
called in France, that of helping to abate, so far as possible,
'the ravages and tremendous increases of that dread disease
that have resulted from war conditions.
HONORABLE GEORG, SUTHERLAND, of Utah. For a time
a member of the Law School of this University. As a representative in Congress and as United States Senator for
two terms, he rendered for his State and for the country,
distinguished service. A lawyer of wide experience and national reputation. whcse professional leadership has been
signally recognized b-. his recent election to the presidency
of the American Bar Association.
