mentioned and fixed the salary of this man, Mr. D. J. Borden, at the rate of $800 per year to date from May I.
2. The Committee granted the petition of Mr. W. H.
Jackson, a student in the College of Engineering last year,
who withdrew May 15 on account of an operation, to be
permitted to return at a corresponding date this year and
finish his studies. His marks up to the time he left were
very high and he is a self supporting student and had in
some way in good faith gained the idea that what he desited to do could be done and had returned to Ann Arbor
accordingly and was reaay for work.

To the Regents of the University of Michigan.
GENTLEMEN:Your Executive Committee at a meeting held May 17,
I917, granted leave of absence to Professor H. H. Bartlett
of our Department of Botany from January i, I918 to the
beginning of the second semester of the academic year
I918-I919. This leave is to be without salary. The leave
is for the purpose of enabling Professor Bartlett to take
charge temporarily of 'the interests of the United States
Rubber Company in Sumatra. The details of Professor
Bartlett's work while in Sumatra are explained in the letter
from him accompanying this report. The Professor is of
the opinion that the trip will afford him great educational
opportunity and that it will increase his future usefulness
at the University. He suggests that from the point of view
of the University a great advantage will be gained by his
retaining a consulting relationship with the Rubber Company after his return. It was necessary that the question
raised by Professor Bartlett be passed upon at once in order to enable him to make the necessary arrangements.
Therefore, your Executive Committee acted and requests a
confirmation of its action.
