Proceedings of the Board of Regents (1914-1917)

JANUARY MEETING, 1917 68i On motion of Regent Leland, the Board approved and adopted the recommendations made in the communication of Dean M. L. Ward, printed below:On March 5 it is necessary for the regular course in Anatomy to be given to the three-year freshman dental students. On account of the introduction of the four-year course at this time, it becomes necessary that an additional number of students take this course, either with the threeyear students, or immediately following in the Summer School. The records at this time indicate that somewhere between 125 and 150 will qualify for the course in Anatomy on March 5, while the capacity of the Anatomical Laboratory is 35 or 40 below this number. This presents the question of deciding which students shall be obliged to take this course in the Summer School, and which shall be permitted to pursue the work on March 5. A recent call for volunteers to take the course in Summer School showed that about I8 or 20 are willing to do so, and the remainder considered it necessary to work during the summer. Inasmuch as it appears to Dr. Huber and his associates, and the Dental Faculty, that some provision must be made whereby we can oblige about 20 or 25 more of these students to take this course in summer, I am communicating to you the requests of the Dental Faculty, first, that they be permitted to select 20 or 25 students who have the lowest grades, and second, that you make some provision whereby the whole number of students who take this course in Summer School, which will be about 35 or 40, will be relieved of paying the Summer School fee of $I6.50. In considering our requests, I trust that you will bear in mind that this is in no way a precedent upon which we may base future requests, but simply a plan arrived at after careful consideration of the matter by all parties concerned, which will, in my opinion, best meet the situation caused by the transitory period from the three- to the four-year course. All of the above actions were by unanimous vote. On motion, the Board adjourned to February 23, at 9:30 A. AM. SHIIRLEY W. SMITH, Secretary.
