Proceedings of the Board of Regents (1914-1917)

DECEMBER MEETING
UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN,
ANN ARBOR, December 22, I916.
The Board met in the Regents' Room at I I o'clock. Present, the President, Regent Sawyer, Regent Beal, Regent
Clements, Regent Hubbard, and Regent Hanchett. Absent.
Regent Leland, Regent Gore, Superintendent Keeler, and
Regent Bulkley, who was present at the afternoon session.
On motion of Regent Hubbard, the minutes of the meeting of November 24 were approved as submitted to the
members in proof, with changes on pages 595, 596, 599, 61i2,
and 62I.
Regent Hubbard reported the further progress of the
committee on the use of University buildings (see page 593),
and he also reported progress with respect to plans for an
addition to the Engineering Building to provide quarters for
Architecture and Surveying (see page 611).
Regent Beal reported, with respect to the matter of professional practice by members of the Chemical staff (see
February Proceedings, page 364), that the committee had
held a session, and on his motion the Board referred further
consideration of this subject to Dean Cooley and Director
E. D. Campbell, in conference with the President, with the
request to harmonize if possible the differences involved.
On motion of Regent Clements, the Board set aside the
sum of $250 to cover the cost of a study by the Buildings
and Grounds Department of the means of providing heat,
light, power, and soft water for the Michigan Union building, and also a water-softening outfit for the University
heating plant and the proposed new laundry.
Regent Beal reported with respect to the proposed budget
of the Summer Session of I9I7. The requests presented to
the committee were for a budget of $75,532.o3, which sum
had been reduced in conference between the committee and
the Dean to $71,810.20. On motion of Regent Hanchett,
