J4NU,4RY MEETING, 1916 357 of the Women's Department, with the understanding that there should be certain rearrangement of the janitor service for the Barbour Gymnasium and that there should be a woman attendant in the Barbour Gymnasium responsible directly to the Dean of Women and not to the Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds. On motion of Regent Beal, Dr. Carl 0. Sauer was appointed Instructor in Geography for the second semester of the present University year, at the salary of $700 for the semester, as provided in the budget. On motion of Regent Bulkley, Regoent Beal was appointed to make formal acceptance by the Regents of the portrait of Dean Victor C. Vaughan painted by Gari Melchers, which portrait is to be presented to the University at the exercises celebrating Founders' Day, February 22. On motion of Regent Leland, the following resolution was adopted:Resolved, That the Auditor General be requested to set aside the unexpended balance in the mill tax of I914, amounting to $57,ooo, into the Accumulation of Savings Fund. The Board considered the application of Mr. W. L,. Peach to be registered as a resident of Michigan. While recognizing the force of the arguments presented, the Regents found themselves unable to grant this request. On motion of Regent Clements, leave of absence for study was granted to Mr. F. L. D. Goodrich, of the General Library, for the second semester of the present University year. This leave is with salary, conditioned upon Mr. Goodrich's meeting the expense of satisfactorily caring for his work during his absence. On motion of Regent Beal, leave of absence, without salary, was granted to Dr. Lee HI. Cone, Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry, for the second semester, in order that Dr. Cone might do commercial work in the development of organic chemistry industries in this State. On motion of Regent Beal, Dr. Oliver Kamm, on leave from the University of Illinois, was appointed Instructor in Organic Chemistry for the second semester of the present University year, at the salary of $750 for the semester, and
