- Context
- This house was built in 1941 as a rental property by Harry Harmon, according to his niece, Carol Girbach. In 1942 an identical house was built by Mr. Harmon at 314 North Lewis. Harry Harmon was a salesman for Washington Manufacturing. Mr. Harmon's grandfather built the Harmon House hotel which previously sat on Michigan Avenue. A 1941 article in the Saline Observer commented on the newly constructed homes, "As compact as can be in keeping with utility and beauty, they surely will make home work a delight for some housewife". Carol and John Girbach bought the house from Harry Harmon, Carol's uncle, in 1952. Carol is a homemaker and worked as a bookkeeper for her father, Ben Uphaus, at Uphaus Electric on East Michigan Avenue. John worked as a machine operator at Tecumseh Products until his retirement.
