About the construction

Description: This one story brick commercial building has a corner entry with store front facing Michigan Avenue.The large plate glass window in the front facade is original, but during a l992 refurbishing a new wood door covered by an awning was installed in the corner entry. This building was a two story Italianate structure with tripartite corner bay window on the second level prior to a fire in 1957.
Date Of Construction: ca.1912
Context: Due to a fire in 1957, the architectural integrity of the building was compromised. However, because of its location at the commercial "four corners" of town, it has contributed to the business history of Saline. It began life as a hardware store owned by Seeger & Schroen. George Seeger was both harnessmaker and fire chief. Still a hardware in the 1940s, it was run by Herman Gross and his son. In the 1920s and 1930s Staebler-Kempf Oil Co. also occupied the building.
