About the construction

Description: This gable front and wing house exhibits Folk Victorian styling with its bay window and front porch with gingerbread trim. The foundation and porch base are stone. Two one-story additions are on the rear. The house is sided with aluminum and has a detached garage.
Date Of Construction: ca.1875
Context: The gable front and wing vernacular house was common to the Midwest and was especially popular on E. McKay Street in the late 1800s. This particular house has gingerbread trim made possible by the advent of the railroad which brought woodworking machinery to Saline after 1870. It was owned by Bessie Collins, city historian, in the 1940s.
