About the construction

Description
Two story, 71/2-bay, brick Italianate structure. Composed of the Corporation Building (101) and the Wallace Block (103-113), together they make a unified whole. The building fronts the sidewalk, and is set on a slightly raised foundation. Dentillated wood upper cornice with brackets. Second story accentuated by recessed, brick panels; and two windows with flattened arch hoods. There is a second cornice above the street level facade which is composed of a slightly recessed entry, flanked by large display windows. The facade of 101 is different from the rest of the building. The recessed panel on the second story is solid brick. North window is stained glass; vertical lights in the second window topped by copper awnings. Doorway between 101 and 103 leads to second story, with a tall, nine light window above.

Context
The Corporation Building section has undergone the most alteration, but the building is still a fine example of an Italianate commercial structure. It forms a key component of the historic "four corners" of Saline. The Wallace Block was built after the fire of 1881 on the site of the Miller building. The Fire Department was located in the Corporation Building, with a bell cupola on the roof. The second story of the Wallace Block housed the Opera House which was one of the social centers of Saline, hosting local and guest artists, church socials, and dances. The building has provided space for civic functions such as: Fire Department, Police Department, Village Council meetings, Post Office, Detroit Edison, and various shops, and offices. This building is listed on the National Register.
