About the construction

Description: Gable end livery barn with double entry door in west facade and cupola on ridgeline.
Date Of Construction: ca.1834
Context: The livery, originally located at 101 N. Lewis, is historically important because of its connection to Orange Risdon, Saline's founding father. The site of the home on N. Lewis was once owned by Risdon, and local history indicates that he lived temporarily in the house. Its original site was just off Chicago Road (now W. Michigan Ave.), an important transportation corridor between Detroit and Chicago. The stable provided horse drawn buggies and sleighs for travelers who were met at the depot by hacks. Residents from the outlying area would board their horses here while at work, school, or shopping. Built ca.1834, the livery stable was moved to the Depot area in 1990. The city, with the help of the Saline Area Historical Society, are in the process of refurbishing it.
