- Context
- This home is a fine example of Queen Anne architecture. Built by State Senator, Egbert P. Harper, who represented the Second District of Washtenaw County from 1885-1888, first as a Democrat and second as a Fusion candidate. He also was Lodi Township Supervisor, and Justice of the Peace. He owned a 240 acre farm in the area and raised Merino sheep. The 1894 city directory lists M. Jane Harper as "(widow Egbert)". Subsequent owner Arthur A. Wood (1916 ca.) also was a prominent sheep breeder. After Wood, Thomas Shurtz (1940's) owned the home. He owned the Handle Factory on West Bennett. The house acquired the title of "haunted house" after Mrs. Wood died in the home and was not immediately discovered. The wrap around porch was added ca. 1912. This house is listed on the National Register as part of the North Ann Arbor Street Historic District.
