Street Scene, Paris [Rue Laffitte (?) ]
Artist
James McNeill Whistler
Physical Description
This watercolor on brown prepared board is vertically oriented. The piece
is reputedly a view of a Parisian street (perhaps in the 8th arrondissement), and the perspective is as if the viewer is on the fourth floor of an adjacent
building. The upper two-thirds of the piece show a building-lined street,
curving gently to the left. The buildings are about six stories tall, and
additional rooftops are barely visible in the distance. On the ground
floor of the buildings, there are traces of people, shops, and cafés. In
the bottom third of the work, the road dissolves, but forms suggesting a
few people populate the space.

In the Restaurant
Artist
Ernst Kirchner
Physical Description
Artist's sketch from life; Kirchner developed a rapid, stroke-oriented (as opposed to detail-oriented) sketch style when out in the world. Appears to be (though not with certainty) two men conversing on the left, a man accompanied by a woman in a very tall hatt in the center/center-right, and a figure in the far right bottom corner foreground leaning toward a surface (a piano? cleaning a table?). Background and tables are suggested with various lines, but unclear.

Study of Barges
Artist
Jan van de Velde
Physical Description
This sheet of sketches of barges and boats suggests that they were drawn from life and meant to capture the rich variety of life along a river. Two of the sketches along the bottom of the sheet show large piles of hay or similar materials; two smaller boats in the upper portion of the paper have smaller cargo. Three of these four sketches show the boats with an oarsman in the rear and are seen passing by from the bank or from another boat. At the upper right corner is a sketch of two boats, possibly tied up to a dock as both are seen end-on from the bows.

Dancing Couple (Dodo and Partner)
Artist
Ernst Kirchner
Physical Description
A man and woman embrace in center; the man appears in a dress coat, the woman in a very large hat. She looks out at the viewer, while the man's head is turned to the left. Near the woman's left elbow is the outline of a suggested figure; another embracing couple is outlined to the right. The smaller figures suggest a perspective and size to the space, only suggested through brief lines and indistinct objects on the left. Artist's sketch from life; Kirchner developed a rapid, stroke-oriented (as opposed to detail-oriented) sketch style when out in the world.
