Plate with three vase design (one of five with 1964/1.100-103)
Artist
Artist Unknown, Nabeshima ware, Japan
Physical Description
A circular, smaller white porcelain plate. On the upper surface, three vases, similar in shape, are shown overlapping diagonally in blue background. The two outer vases run off the plate’s rim. They are outlined in underglaze blue and are against a painted light-blue background. The left vase is covered with a white glaze (which left unpainted) under a red key-fret design. The center vase is totally covered with a white crackle pattern done in blue underglaze line. The right vase has a design of evenly-spaced red flowers. Precise flat bases are combined with a rather awkward suggestion of a three-dimensional view of the lips. The back has a triple representation of peony buds surrounded by fine branching stems and leaves. On the shallow foot, bold lines are drawn in a row like a comb. The design on the back is all drawn with blue underglaze. (Referencce: Becker, Sister Johanna. “A Group of Nabeshima Porcelain.”)

Wine drinking goblet or beaker with a wide, trumpet-shaped mouth, narrow, banded waist, and flaring foot. The slender silhouette of the vessel suggests a date towards the end of the Late Shang period. The body is decorated with Tao-tie mask design, divided by the elaborate raised flanges. Gu (libation goblet, one of a pair with 1948/1.118)
Artist
Artist Unknown, China
Physical Description
Wine drinking goblet or beaker with a wide, trumpet-shaped mouth, narrow, banded waist, and flaring foot. The slender silhouette of the vessel suggests a date towards the end of the Late Shang period. The body is decorated with Tao-tie mask design, divided by the elaborate raised flanges. An inscription is found inside the flaring foot, presumably the name of the person that the vessel is dedicated or the clan emblem.

Sugar bowl with lid, from 3-piece tea service
Artist
Wiener Werkstätte
Physical Description
One of a three-piece tea service, the sugar bowl is a small silver container with a lobed shape and a flat lid with a bone finial. The finial is carved into four lobes to match the body of the pot. The surface of the silver is not glassy-smooth; it has a hand-worked, hammered surface. The overall design impression is of satisfying geometric proportions with a slightly organic feel.

Shigaraki ware plate
Artist
Takahashi Rakusai III
Physical Description
A rectangular shaped plate with eight circular patterns. The rim is slightly flared out to create the concave shape. The top surface is unglazed, scorched to an intense red. The bottom does not have foot. In the kiln, the thick clay slabs were stacked close together so that the floating ash landed on the edge of the plate facing the flame. The circular patterns are areas that were protected from the flame by cylinder clay spacers.
