Supplemental Materials (draft)

  • c1475(1392) *MS Wel.564 (Wel 564)116b/b : If a man be woundid in þe heed þou schalt kepe þat wounde whanne it schal be opened from þe eir þat it entre not in to þe wounde and þerfore þou schalt spere out þe eir and diȝte þe wounde wiþ a caudel.
Note: New sense: Med. ?a medical ointment or dressing.
Note: MED uses this same quot. under speren v.(1), sense 5., where "caudel" has been transcribed as "candel." Although candles may be used medicinally (see candel n., sense 1a.(b)) the sense doesn't seem suitable for this quot. The quot. doesn't seem to belong to caudel n., either. Presently, not enough information to determine where this quot. belongs.--notes per MLL
