(a) A comb-like instrument used in arranging the fibers of wool, etc., for spinning; a wool card; also, the same instrument used (illegally) to raise the nap on cloth [quot.: 1464]; (b) ~ maker, a maker of wool cards; (c) ~ bord, the wooden back of a card; ~ lef, a sheet of leather holding the teeth of a card in place; ~ maker-craft, the occupation of card making; the guild of the card makers; ~ wir, the wire from which the teeth of wool cards are made; ~ wir-drauer, a maker of card wire; ~ wir-drauing, the making of card wire; (d) in plant name: toth ~ [see toth n.(1). 7.(a)].
