1.
A combining element with the meanings ‘forward, front’ or ‘in front, before’ in at least ten nouns, along with two verbs and a gerund either related to or derived from them. Five of the nouns are direct borrowings from AF or OF (vaum-brace, vaum-pei, vaumure, vaunt-gard(e, and prob. vaunt-ward(e); the other five are definite or probable ME formations (van-lai, vaum-plate, vaun-chace, vaun-chacour, and vaunte-taper). The related verbs are van-laien and vaum-peien, and the gerund is vaum-peiinge. In addition, three other nouns may illustrate the combining element: vomrel, vougard, and vumbarde; for details see the three entries.
