Definitions (Senses and Subsenses)

1.
A prefix or combining element in ten words of OE origin, chiefly nouns and adjectives, meaning 'two, double' or 'twice, doubly': the nouns twibil, twihinde, twinter (from the OE adjective), twirædnisse, and twispeche; the adjectives twifold, twifoldli, and twired; one adverb, twifoldli; and one verb, twifolden. The prefix was moderately active in ME. With its expected meanings it appears in twibit(e n., twimalwe n., twicroched, and twimel adj.; probably in twirin n.; and possibily in twielinge n. It also appears in twilight n. and twilighting n., though with uncertain sense: it may mean 'twice a day', but more likely 'half'. Two other combinations could be construed as containing the prefix: the participle twei-bitinge and the gerund twie-wivinge. Both have been given in twie adv. because the verbal quality of the second element appears to be dominant in each, but the first combination may have been formed on twibit(e n., and the second is not so different from twielinge n. and twilighting n. See further the comments in twie adv. (d).
