A prefix in more than seventy words from L or OF originally meaning 'across, over', 'through, to the other side', 'on the other side, beyond'. The great majority of these words are nouns and verbs, but adjectives and participles also appear occasionally. For example, the nouns tradicioun, trajectorie, tramountaine, transcript, transfiguracioun, transgressour, transite, trans lucence, travers, and travesail; the verbs transcriven, transfiguraten, transfusen, transmuen, transplaunten, trauncen(1), and traversen; the adjectives transcendent, transcripte, transitori(e, transmeabil, transversarie, transversaunt, and traversable; and the participles transmigrat and transmutate. The prefix appears not to have been active in ME. Of the words without direct counterparts in L or OF, the gerunds transcending, transfiguring, transforminge, translating(e, transplaunting, transporting, transposing, trauncinge, and travesinge come directly from the related ME verbs; the gerunds transpiring and transsubstansinge either come directly from the OF or ML verbs or are back formations from related ME nouns; the noun traunsin is prob. from ME traunce n.; the adjective transversable is from the related ME verb; and the adverbs transversali and transversli are from the related ME adjectives. Only the noun transbeacion may reflect an active use of the prefix, but probably it is also derivative, formed from ML elements. The words with trans- and related spellings are from both L and OF (though a majority are from L or ML); the words with tra- spellings are chiefly from OF or AF (though a few are directly from L, and in addition L trans- also had the variant trā- in certain phonological environments). There is also a related prefix tres-, from OF (ultimately from L trans-), which appears in tresmountaine adj., the trespas- series of words, and perh. tresaunce n., but it has not been included in the present survey.
