Etymology | OE toren-īge, toran-ēage; the first to- in the form totore- is prob. a rendering of L ad (in addition to the equivalent wið, both of which were retained erroneously), though the full form may be the scribe's interpretation of the first part of the comb. as the p.ppl. of ME tọ̄̆tēren v.(2). |
